FRANKLIN – Janie Onella Lassiter, 89, passed away March 3, 2025 in Courtland Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 10, 1936 in Nansemond County to the late Claude Elmer Lassiter Sr. and Ruby Lee Jones Lassiter and was also predeceased by three brothers, Claude E. Lassiter Jr., Robert W. Lassiter and James Glenn Lassiter.
Onella was a graduate of Holland High School and a former manager of the Lunch Box at Roses Department Store on Main Street in Franklin. She loved all of the customers and coworkers there. Onella later managed High’s Ice Cream and Kentucky Fried Chicken when they were located downtow
n. Her final paid job was at Fred’s. She never met a stranger. She loved to cook Sunday lunch for all that came to visit, loved her family and loved to read newspapers.
Left to cherish her memory is her sister, M. Kathryn Cutchins and her husband, Rochelle and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 7 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Inman and Chaplain Sharon Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Black Creek Baptist Church.
