WINDSOR– Rachel Joyner Rhodes, 93, widow of Gurney Rhodes Jr., passed away Feb. 17, 2025 in Sentara Obici. She was raised in Capron and was a daughter of the late Edwin Hunter Joyner and Lucy Barnes Joyner and was also predeceased by her son, Stephen Rhodes and her siblings, Thomas Joyner, Betty Brock, Anna Kitchen, Hunter Cowling, Elizabeth Baldwin and Lewis Joyner.
Rachel was proud to say she was Valedictorian of her Newsoms High School class of 10. She lived most of her life in Windsor and was a retired corrections officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections. Rachel was a member of Colosse Baptist Church which she dearly loved.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Susan Cook (Johnny) of Windsor and Cynthia Wells (Buxton) of Smithfield; four grandchildren, Rhonda Ainsley (Paul), Beth Lowe (Randy), Scott Wells (Zoey) and Lee Cook (April); 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 in Colosse Baptist Church with Pastor Martin Chappell and Pastor Tim Webb officiating. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Colosse Baptist Church.
