Felts appointed to FCPS Central Office role

Franklin City Public Schools has officially announced the appointment of Travis Felts as the school division’s new director of extracurricular activities, JVG and virtual programs.
A Monday, Feb. 10, news release noted that Felts brings more than 16 years of comprehensive experience in school leadership and athletics administration to his new role.
“Mr. Felts has built a distinguished career, most notably serving as principal of Franklin High School, where he has left a lasting impact on the educational community,” FCPS officials stated.
His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, earned in 1995, a master’s degree from Old Dominion University, earned in 2007, and an advanced degree in administration and supervision, earned in 2009.
“This educational background has provided him with a solid foundation in both educational theory and practice,” FCPS officials stated.
Felts began his career at Rustburg Middle School in Campbell County, teaching health and physical education for grades five through eight. Following that, he taught the same subject for grades six through eight in Isle of Wight County. He joined FCPS in August 1998 as a middle school health and PE teacher, transitioning to the high school level in 2000.
Officials stated that his dedication to education and strong leadership qualities led him to various administrative roles, starting as an administrative assistant in 2009. Then he served as an assistant principal, and ultimately he served as principal at Franklin High School. Officials noted that during his tenure, he remained committed to creating a supportive and enriching environment for students.
“In his new position, Mr. Felts will leverage his extensive knowledge to manage and enhance the diverse range of sports, clubs and organizations available to students in grades K-12,” FCPS officials stated. “His plans include aligning these programs with the varied needs of the student body, thereby enhancing the extracurricular offerings within Franklin City Public Schools.”
Felts aims to implement targeted support and innovative strategies to boost student engagement throughout the district, contributing significantly to the mission of accelerating, innovating and transforming the educational experience for all students.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as principal of Franklin High School since 2012,” Felts stated. “The relationships with the students, staff and community are very important and special to me. This is what I will miss the most. I am excited and reinvigorated about the opportunity to contribute to Franklin City Public Schools and the outstanding students, teachers and staff in our division in this new capacity.”
“As Mr. Felts transitions to his new position, Franklin High School will enjoy a smooth change in leadership,” FCPS officials stated.
Dr. Tonica H. White, the current lead administrator, will serve as interim principal, bringing her extensive experience to the position. Additionally, Paul Jackson will assume enhanced responsibilities as the new lead administrator. Dr. Nichelle Ricks will remain in her role as assistant principal, providing ongoing support to the school, and Dr. Alan Scott will continue as dean of students.
“Together, this dedicated team is well-equipped to lead Franklin High School into its next chapter,” FCPS officials stated.
