Although the air was frigid, the 14th annual MLK Walk and Program was a success for the Franklin Tri-County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. on Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The MLK Walk and Program was held inside Camp Community College’s Regional Workforce Development Center.
A chapter news release noted that after a prayer over the walk by Marilyn Lawrence, participants were led by members of Boykins Girl Scout Group No. 5073 as they walked three laps inside the Workforce Development Center — one for freedom, one for justice and one for democracy.
The 90+ participants then assembled in the main theater for a beautiful program that was opened by emcee Angela Artis. The program featured a welcome by Kim Walker-Lee, posting of the colors by the Girl Scouts, Scripture reading by Darnell and Landon Lee and prayer by Jerrell King.
The Wynton D. Davis MLK Celebration Choir blessed guests with several songs throughout the program. A tribute to Dr. King titled “The Drum Major” was made by LeAndrew Watford and Denver Tyler.
Retired Judge Alfreda T. Harris was the 14th annual MLK Walk and Program’s keynote speaker.
“In her message to those in attendance, she shared light on how we all need to be unified in saving our next generation,” chapter officials stated.
Colette Hill then closed the program with prayer.

“On behalf of the Project Program Planning and Development Committee Chairperson Lillian Davis, along with Chapter President Dorothy Blunt and the members of Franklin Tri-County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., much thanks to everyone for coming out, the members of the Divine Nine, Masonics and Shriners, Eastern Stars, Down the Middle (Foundation), as well as representation from area churches and other community members,” chapter officials stated.
“Thanks also to all who donated coats, hats and gloves to our community service project,” the officials added. “Items will be donated to area elementary schools.”
The 15th annual MLK Walk and Program is set for Monday, Jan. 19, 2026.
