Students at S.P. Morton Elementary School in Franklin received food for the mind and soul on Thursday, Oct. 24. That’s when five members of Windsor-based Community Harvest Outreach Inc. personally provided a book for each and every child — 800, to be precise.

A Franklin City Public Schools news release noted that in the school entranceway that afternoon, Laequinla Hunter, Tyra Hodges, Debra Hicks, Alexis Carter and Sabrina Parker set up and decorated a table, then loaded it with books appropriate to the age groups that came up to pick out a new book. To each student the women sweetened the selection by also giving out small packets of candy; they prepared about 1,900 bags.

Hunter, who serves on Community Harvest Outreach’s Board of Directors, said later in a phone interview that the group approached SPM about working with the school in 2024-25.

“We were looking to extend our borders past Windsor and help more children,” she said.

For National Reading Month, which is in October, the book distribution is usually done in Windsor, but as just mentioned above, the service group wanted to go further afield.

SPM Principal Angela Fair said the partnership with Community Harvest Outreach first started at the beginning of the school year by “blessing all our teachers with $25 Wawa or Walmart gift cards, book bags and school supplies while helping our children. It was a wonderful service.”

“We’re very grateful,” she said about the collaboration.

Hunter confirmed the organization will help out again around Christmastime.

“We are looking forward to continuing our partnership and serving the children at SPM,” she added.
