Biden, Trump dominate primaries at state and local levels

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and former President Donald J. Trump dominated the presidential primary elections for their respective parties in Virginia on Super Tuesday, March 5, as well as in Franklin, Southampton County and Isle of Wight County.

According to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections website, with 133 out of 133 localities reporting statewide on Tuesday morning, March 12, Biden had won the Democratic Party Presidential Primary with 88.52% of the vote. Marianne Williamson received 7.97%, and Dean Benson Phillips received 3.51%.

In the Republican Party Presidential Primary, Trump won with 62.99% of the vote, while Nikki R. Haley received 34.98%, with 133 of 133 localities reporting. The only other candidate to receive at least 1% was Ron D. DeSantis, with 1.07%.

FRANKLIN

In Franklin, all precincts were reporting as of March 12, according to the Virginia Department of Elections website. Results were still considered unofficial.

Biden dominated the Democratic Primary in Franklin, earning 92.94% of the vote and winning every precinct.

Voter turnout was at 5.71%, with 340 ballots cast out of 5,956 registered voters.

Trump received 71.55% of the vote in the Republican Primary in Franklin, winning every precinct. Haley received 27.39% of the vote.

Voter turnout was at 7.91%, with 471 ballots cast out of 5,956 registered voters.

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY

In Southampton County, all precincts were reporting as of March 12, according to the elections website. Results were still considered unofficial.

Biden won the Democratic Primary in Southampton with 94.22% of the vote, winning every precinct reporting votes. No provisional ballots were submitted. 

Williamson had been listed as the runaway winner of the Blackwater River Precinct in the immediate wake of the election on the state website, listed as having received 29 votes, with Phillips receiving one and Biden receiving none. However, by March 12, this had been amended to 59 votes for Biden and two apiece for Phillips and Williamson.

Voter turnout for the primary in the county was at 4.42%, with 589 ballots cast out of 13,315 registered voters.

Trump won the Republican Primary in Southampton with 85.57% of the vote, winning every precinct. Haley drew 13.78% of the vote. 

Voter turnout for the primary in the county was at 12.81%, with 1,705 ballots cast out of 13,315 registered voters.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY

In Isle of Wight County, all precincts were reporting as of March 12, according to the elections website. Results were still considered unofficial.

Biden won the primary in Isle of Wight with 93.46% of the vote, winning every precinct.

Voter turnout was at 4.91%, with 1,547 ballots cast out of 31,476 registered voters.

For the Republican Primary in Isle of Wight, only provisional and post-election ballots were listed as not reported on the elections website as of Wednesday morning, and no status was listed for absentee ballots.

Trump won the primary in Isle of Wight with 74.44% of the vote, winning every precinct. Haley received 24.18% of the vote.

Voter turnout was at 14.72%, with 4,632 ballots cast out of 31,476 registered voters.
