BOYKINS – Robert “Bobby” Johnson Lewis, 83, passed away peacefully March 4, 2024, in his home surrounded by family. Bobby was born in Appomattox, Virginia on Dec. 23, 1940, to the late William Henry Lewis and Thelma Davis Smith.

Bobby grew up in Appomattox and graduated from Appomattox High School. He met Patricia “Pat” Lassiter Lewis on Main Street in Boykins in 1962 when Pat was leaving work and Bobby called out, “When are you going to take me for a ride?” After this encounter, they were inseparable and were married on Ja

n. 27, 1963, at Boykins Baptist Church. Bobby was passionate about serving others. He has held many titles in his lifetime, Honorary Lifetime Deacon at Boykins Baptist Church, Honorary Lifetime Member of the Boykins Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for his years of service and dedication to the community, Scoutmaster for Boykins Boy Scouts Troop 212 and volunteer at Meherrin Elementary School in the Lifesavers for Reading Program. Among these titles in the community, his favorites were husband, father, PopPop and friend.

Bobby enjoyed going to various Shooting Academies with his son, Bill. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Pat, on bus trips and cruise trips. He enjoyed preparing breakfast every Wednesday, alongside R.T. Lassiter and Paster Raymond Bunn at Boykins Baptist Church for their Bible study. He looked forward to the many school activities, softball games, cross country meets and dinners spent with his granddaughter, Kelby. Bobby will forever be remembered as a generous and God-loving man, who touched the lives of many people throughout his short time on this earth. As Psalm 73:26 states, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” May we all live and love as Bobby did.

Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life Patricia Lassiter Lewis. They celebrated 61 happy years of marriage in January of this year. He is also survived by his son, William “Bill” Johnson Lewis and his wife, Michelle; his “pride and joy”/granddaughter, Kelby Lewis Harrup and her husband, Braxton and cousins J.B. Hudnall and his daughters, Jill and Katie and nephew Clete Lassiter and his wife, Renee. He is preceded in death by Thelma Davis Smith (mother), Hinton T. Smith (stepfather), Mildred Lassiter (mother-in-law) and Buck Lassiter (brother-in-law).

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at Boykins Baptist Church with Pastor Raymond Bunn officiating. The burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins. The family will be receiving friends at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 in the fellowship hall at Boykins Baptist Church.
