FRANKLIN – Bernice Modlin Hasenei, 94, widow of Orville Lee “Smokey” Hasenei, passed away Feb. 29, 2024 in East Pavilion. Born and raised in Southampton County, she was a daughter of the late Pearly Edgar Modlin and Minnie Sue Taylor Modlin. She is predeceased by her six sisters, Elizabeth Rich, Grace Keech, Pearl Juel, Hope Dodson, Evelyn Modlin and Minnie Boone and her two brothers, Clayton and Roland Modlin.

hools and a member of Franklin Baptist Church. After retiring she spent countless hours taking care of her husband, Smokey and her sisters that passed away before her.

Bernice, affectionately known as “G” and G Ma,” is survived by two daughters, Susan H. Vinson (Billy) and Nancy H. Layman (Ritchie); a son, Wayne M. Hasenei (Robin); four grandchildren, William C. Vinson Jr. (LeAnn), Christopher E. Vinson (Crystal), Heidi L. Vinson and Jacob L. Layman (Melissa); three great-grandchildren, Carson Vinson, Addison Layman and Cole Layman and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Franklin Fire and Rescue Volunteers Fund, 100 S. Main Street, Franklin, VA 23851.
