S.P. Morton Elementary School’s administration announced Thursday morning, Feb. 29, that the school will close Friday, March 1, to perform a deep cleaning of the building in light of an uptick in illnesses among students and staff amid flu and cold season.

SPM Principal Angela E. Fair made the announcement via a letter to S.P. Morton families.

“Here at S.P. Morton Elementary School, we consider the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff a top priority,” she wrote. “As we are in full swing of the flu and cold season, we are being careful to ensure that we are all implementing all recommended steps to keep everyone safe.

“We have noticed an uptick in sicknesses among our students and staff, and as a result of careful review and consideration of the physical and mental health needs, the district and school-based administration has chosen to address this situation,” she continued. “We feel that it is essential that we close SPM to perform a deep cleaning of our building on Friday, March 1, 2024. It takes all of us working together to ensure healthy learning environments. Thank you for your continuous support.”

She stated that additionally, the Boys and Girls Club will be closed for the day at S.P. Morton, per Eric Taylor, the director.

Fair encouraged those with questions or concerns to call the SPM office at 757-562-5458.
