The Windsor Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday, Dec. 12, to accept a proposal presented by Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia for the provision of senior programs at the Windsor Town Center.

In 2022, the Town Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a similar SSSEVA proposal.

However, Senior Services chose in September 2022 to keep looking for a location to serve the older adults of Windsor and the surrounding area, opting not to go with the Windsor Town Center given some of the scheduling and logistical limitations involved.

In a Dec. 12 staff report, Windsor Town Manager William Saunders noted that SSSEVA subsequently instituted programming in Zuni, which did not yield the response hoped for. Consequently, programs in Windsor were again being considered.

“Ms. Charnitta Waters of SSSEVA met with Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation, as well as town staff to discuss the proposal on Nov. 14, 2023,” Saunders stated. “At their Dec. 5, 2023, meeting, the Windsor Town Center Advisory Board reiterated their view that seniors attending these functions should leave the premises by 2 p.m. so as not to be hindered by the traffic and stacking related to parents picking up their children from Georgie Tyler Middle School.”

“The current proposal is to provide lunches and activities three days per week for approximately 20 seniors,” he added. “The expectation is to increase to four days per week if successful.”
