BOYKINS – James Arnold “Bugga” Vargo, 73, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 15, 2023 in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late John Charles Vargo Sr. and Josephine Hasty Vargo. He was also predeceased by a brother, John “Buck” Vargo Jr.; a niece, Angelina V. Harris; his father and mother-in-law, Norman H. and Lona B. Edwards; and a brother-in-law, Frederick R. O’Neal.

Bugga was a 1969 graduate of Franklin High School and a Vietnam Army veteran. He was a retired main

tenance supervisor in the particleboard plant at Union Camp Corporation with 26 years of service, worked at Southside Gas and was presently working at Southampton Cutting.

He was a member of the Bronco Rod and Gun Club, the Catholic Club and a former member of Byrum Hunt Club in Suffolk. Bugga was a loving husband, father, brother and a friend to many. He will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 51 years, Kay Edwards Vargo; a daughter, Kelly Vargo Byers (Adam) of Jarratt; a sister, Mary Vargo O’Neal of Rodanthe, North Carolina; a brother, Thomas E. Vargo of Oriental, North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Gracie K. Vargo; a brother-in-law, Alan C. Edwards (Beverly); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 in Southampton Memorial Park with Chaplain Joe Bain officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday in Wright Funeral Home and suggests that memorial donations be made to the Bronco Rod and Gun Club, c/o Jayton Lowe, 30354 Sycamore Avenue, Sedley, VA 23878.
