Indians, Raiders sustain losses on gridiron

The varsity football teams for Southampton High School and Southampton Academy have suffered losses in recent weeks during the early going of the 2023 season.

The Indians opened their schedule with a 56-7 road loss to Poquoson High School on Aug. 25. After a bye, they were set to return to action at home against Petersburg High School on Friday, Sept. 8, but inclement weather and a power outage forced them to reschedule the game for Monday, Sept. 11. Southampton lost in a tight contest with the Crimson Wave, 12-7.

Only four days later, the Indians were back on the field when they hosted Colonial Heights High School. The Indians fell 34-3 to the Colonials.

Southampton (0-3) visits Lakeland High School (0-3) on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., and then it begins its Tri-Rivers District schedule. The Indians are the defending district champions.

The Southampton Academy Raiders began their season with a 50-0 home win over Quantico High School on Aug. 24 and a 42-40 road win over Rappahannock County High School on Sept. 1.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, the Raiders lost to visiting Chincoteague High School 27-14, and on Thursday, Sept. 14, they fell to visiting Brunswick Academy 54-6.

The Raiders (2-2) will look to move back above .500 when they visit rival Kenston Forest School (4-0) on Friday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
