Isle of Wight Academy sports: Competitive on the trail

CROSS COUNTRY

Isle of Wight Academy junior John Butler finished 12th in a cross country meet Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Norfolk Academy.

Butler completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 49 seconds, and the Chargers finished fourth out of seven teams. Zachary Jackson finished 15th with a time of 19:33, and Jayce Joyner rounded out the top 20 at 19:55.

IWA also finished fourth in the girls cross country competition. Top Lady Charger finishers included Alexandra Wilson in 22nd place at 24:37, Hailey Whitley in 23rd at 24:38 and Jillian Foster in 25th at 25:01.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

IWA’s girls volleyball team ran its record to 3-5 after a 1-1 week, which included a 3-1 win over Portsmouth Christian School and a 3-0 loss to Denbigh Baptist Christian School.

FOOTBALL

The IWA football team fell to VISAA Division I rival Norfolk Academy 41-8 Thursday night, Sept. 14, at William Hooper Field.

The Bulldogs (4-0) play in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association division reserved for the commonwealth’s biggest private schools. 

IWA plays in Division II but formerly competed in Division III, the lowest division; Division III, formerly reserved for the smallest schools, was eliminated this year, and those schools combined with those in Division II.

The Chargers (0-3) return to the field Friday, Sept. 29, when they host Catholic High School at Hooper Field. Start time will be 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept.  22: Cross country at Woodberry Forest, 4 p.m.
