Several teams from Isle of Wight County Schools placed in the Great Computer Challenge this spring.

The long-running event is a joint project of local radio station WHRO, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction and Old Dominion University. It provides a competitive opportunity for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, from public and private schools, to demonstrate their knowledge of various computer applications and programming skills. The Level 1 competition is for grades K-2. Level 2 is for grades 3-5.

A Level 2 desktop presentations team from Carrsville Elementary placed first in the competition.  The team members are Justin Moore, Nathan Curle, and Tristan Bradshaw. Deana Hubbell and Lynn Taplin coached the team.

Two teams from Carrollton Elementary competed in the visual programming/block coding category. Level 1 team of Brantley Haslip, Jaxton Gray, and Trace Sciarrotta was awarded a rating of “good” for the game they created in the programming language ScratchJr. The Level 2 team of Ivy Kole, Mason Walker, and Emmett Brown received an honorable mention for their work. Michelle Pealo coached both teams.

A Level 1 desktop publishing team from Hardy Elementary received a rating of good. Team members are Grace Dewitt, Rebecca Matzen, and Johanna Freeman. Coaches are Angela Thompson and Alicia Reeves.

Hardy’s Level 1 visual programming/block coding team also received a rating of good. Team members are Mariah Major, Jared Blount, Elijah Bradley.  Coaches are Mallory Bradley and Kathy Wood.

Hardy’s Level 1 graphic design team received a “superior” rating. Team members are Elena Smith, Holly White, and Angelina Turner. Coaches are Heather Stafford and Erin Matzen.

Hardy’s Level 2 graphic design team placed second. Team members are Emily Reed, Ori Brown, and Hannah Maloney. Stafford and Matzen also coached the Level 2 team from Hardy.

A Level 2 desktop publishing team from Westside Elementary placed first. The team members are Zion Bivens, Katalina Buchanan, and Noah Bemiller.  The coach is Laura Shelton.

Westside’s desktop presentations team, comprised of Jennifer Mady and Kinsley Peppers, placed third. The coach is Grace Yarborough.

Windsor High School placed second in desktop publishing. Team members are Keaera Kea-Towns, Ladesha Warren, Dionna Oliver, Rajhane Turner. Coaches are Sharon Smallwood-Moore and Tyler Mosley.

WHS received an honorable mention in the category of desktop presentations. Team members include Journey Johnson, Jaiona Rich, Javontae McNeil, Mackenzie Burns, and Estefanie Jones.
