A portion of Route 743 (Burnt Reed Road) near Boykins in Southampton County is open to traffic as of Friday, Aug. 25, following the early completion of a Virginia Department of Transportation project to replace the bridge over Tarrara Creek.
A VDOT news release noted that the work on Route 743 near the intersection of Route 743 (Burnt Reed Road) and Route 716 (Odom Chapel Road) included replacing the previous multi-span, steel-beam, wood-deck bridge. The new single-span, box-beam bridge includes expanded 11-foot travel lanes.
The project, originally scheduled for completion this fall, finished months ahead of schedule and under budget. VDOT awarded the $1.29 million bridge replacement project contract to Crofton Construction Services Inc. in late 2022, with construction beginning in February 2023.
