SMITHFIELD – Harwood Francis “H.F.” or “Woody” Babb Jr., 80, passed away on July 28, 2023 in Riverside Regional Medical Center. Born in Suffolk and raised in Courtland, he was the son of the late Harwood Francis Babb Sr. and Frances Porter Babb. He was also predeceased by his brother, Jimmy Babb.

H.F./Woody graduated from Southampton High School and went on to receive an associate’s degree from Roanoke Business College. For most of his career, he farmed with his brother Jimmy and was the former owner of H.F. Babb and Sons Fertilizer Company. He retired from his career as a chemical company sales representative. H.F./Woody enjoyed golfing, going to the beach and always visiting his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Babb; his son, Christopher Babb and partner, Rachel Vincitore; two grandchildren, Aaron and Kala Babb; his stepchildren, Jeff (Misty), Joshua (Raven) and Jessica; and stepgrandchildren, Emma, Leo, Lilly and Cora; his aunt and uncle, Mary Katherine and John Greig; nephew, Mark Babb and many beloved cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Riverside Cemetery, 22551 Main Street, in Courtland. In the event of inclement weather, a service will be held at Wright Funeral Home in Franklin. A celebration of life reception to follow at Serve Restaurant in Franklin. The family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Sierra Club.
