The Franklin Police Department and Virginia State Police investigated some suspicious activity that reportedly took place Thursday afternoon, June 22, near Armory Park. Precautions were taken, and when the investigation had been completed, no hazards had been found.

An FPD news release stated that at approximately 1:38 p.m. on Thursday, the Franklin Emergency Communications Center received a call advising that a vehicle had been stopped in the roadway on Armory Drive and an individual had gotten out and was going through a large duffle-type bag. The caller advised that the individual returned to his vehicle and drove off, leaving the bag behind.

FPD officers and members of Franklin Fire and Rescue responded to the area of 935 Armory Drive and discovered a large carry-on-type bag along the fenceline of Armory Park, police said. After an initial examination of the bag by Franklin Fire and Rescue, the area was evacuated, and the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations was contacted for assistance.

Virginia State Police technicians completed their investigation of the bag and found no hazards, the release stated.

“The Franklin Police Department would like to thank Franklin Fire and Rescue and the Virginia State Police for their assistance,” FPD officials said.
