Members of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe of Southampton County, led by Chief Walt “Red Hawk” Brown, gave native presentations this spring at two schools in North Carolina — Conway Middle School and Gaston STEM Leadership Academy. A tribe news release noted that tribal members presented to more than 200 students at CMS who ranged from third to fifth graders, and at GSLA, there were about 90-plus students on hand. Brown issued a “thank you” to the following tribal members who danced at the two presentations in full native regalia: Bernard Wright, Teresa Preston, Annie Thomas, Brenda Taylor, Pat Redwood, Mary Francis Wilkerson, Beverly El and Ellis Wright. The tribe was presented a check for $2,000 as a stipend for the two presentations.
