The Virginia Department of Transportation has reopened a portion of Route 189 (South Quay Road) between U.S. 58 (Southampton Parkway) and Route 714 (Pretlow Road) as the work to replace the bridge over Blackwater River nears completion.
The project involves replacing the bridge on Route 189 with a fixed-span structure that included a higher, 35-foot vertical clearance, two 11-foot lanes and 6-foot shoulders, according to a VDOT news release. Single-lane closures are possible in both directions of Route 189 as crews complete final construction activities through the end of the month.
Byant Structures, Inc. was awarded the $11.3 million construction contract and initiated work on the bridge replacement project in February 2021.
