The Courtland-based Heart of Gold Shelter held a prayer breakfast April 15 at the Courtland Ruritan Club building to support domestic violence awareness.

A shelter news release noted that the theme for the breakfast this year was “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made — Psalm 139:14.”

This year’s speaker was the Rev. Carmen Scoggins, who is a survivor of domestic violence.

“Rev. Scoggins spoke of loving yourself and knowing who you are, most of all that God loves each of us,” Heart of Gold Shelter CEO and founder LaRhonda Mabry said.

Scoggins also emphasized the message of Psalm 139:14, which states that people are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

“We truly thank God for such an impactful message she gave the guests,” Mabry said. “Domestic violence is a serious matter, and we as a community can’t take it lightly. We have to get to a place to speak out and break the silence of domestic violence.”

If anyone is going through domestic violence, they are asked to call 1-800-787-3224. They can also contact Mabry at 434-378-0900 or heartofgoldshelter@gmail.com.
