May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to promote awareness, education and support for those living with mental health conditions.

A news release from Lambda Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. noted that mental health affects everyone, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity.

“To understand how to treat and cope with mental health conditions, it is essential that we educate ourselves and others about the impact of mental health on our lives and the lives of those around us,” officials stated in the release.

Lambda Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is committed to provide mental health resources and support for the community under the umbrella of the Sorority’s Empower Our Families initiative, officials added. Therefore, Lambda Psi Omega Chapter has partnered with the Franklin-Southampton Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and First Baptist Church’s Health and FLAIR Ministries to present “Mental Health – It’s A Serious Matter,” an event set for Saturday, May 6.

It will run from 1-2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, which is located at 318 Hall St. in Franklin.

Attendees will have the chance to learn more about mental health from a panel of experts and participate in a question-and-answer session.

The event is free and open to the public.
