Isle of Wight Academy sports: Baseball team earns big wins

BASEBALL

Jackson Cofer and Jake Wells each had two hits as Isle of Wight Academy’s varsity baseball team catapulted its record to 3-1 on the young season with an 11-4 win Friday, Mar. 31, at Bishop Sullivan Catholic. 

Cofer’s hit total included a three-run homer in the third inning to center field after a long foul ball to right the pitch before. Wells also had three RBIs in the game along with a double and a triple.

Ian Rickmond pitched four innings, allowing four hits and three runs, walking three and striking out four. Alex Holt pitched three innings of relief, allowing a hit and an unearned run, striking out four and walking a pair.

Rickmond was 2-for-2 with two RBIs as Isle of Wight dominated visiting Christchurch School on March 29 by a score of 10-0.

Wells pitched four one-hit innings, allowing four walks and striking out six. Cody Thomas pitched a one-hit inning to nail down the win for IWA. Eighth-grade catcher Drake Williams was 2-for-3 and drove in a run; junior Ashton Rogers was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Wells and Rickmond each had two hits as Isle of Wight Academy topped Hampton Roads Academy 17-3 on Tuesday, March 28.

The Chargers worked Navigator pitching for 18 walks, and Rogers collected the win for IWA (1-1), tossing 3.2 innings in two-hit, two-run and two-strikeout fashion.

IWA continued its struggles against Greenbrier Christian Academy, losing to the visiting Gators 9-8 on Thursday, March 17.

Rogers was 3-for-3, scored twice and walked; Holt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Cofer was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Williams was 1-for-3, driving in a pair and hitting a double in that contest.

The Chargers are 0-6 against the Gators since 2018, including losses in the 2021 and ’22 state tournaments.

GOLF

The IWA golf team defeated Broadwater Academy by 38 strokes Wednesday, March 29, in a match played at the Eastern Shore Country Club. 

Senior Luke Jones was medalist, and Spencer Conrad was runner-up.

SOFTBALL

The IWA softball team started its year 0-3 with losses to Hickory High School, Central Virginia HomeSchool and Western Branch High School. Leading hitters have included junior Nora Pye, whose three doubles leads the team.

IWA ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION GOLF TOURNEY

The IWA Athletic Association Golf Tournament will be Saturday, May 6, at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk.
