Capron Elementary School third grade teacher Dr. Muriel Artis recently used Math March Madness to review one of her math Virginia Standards of Learning objectives. 

A school news release noted that Artis used the March Madness room transformation to review fractions with students. Each math class was divided into competing basketball teams. Their objective was to score the most points for their team by answering questions correctly. 

The students had four rotation stations to answer fraction-skill questions. Let’s Get Ballin’ reviewed mixed and improper fractions. Nothin’ But Net was the writing fractions station. Math Madness compared fractions with like and unlike denominators. Students also had to identify addition and subtraction key words found in fraction word problems (The Basketball Sort). 

After students answered the questions in each station, the self-check key gave immediate feedback. Students kept record of their answers on the recording answer sheet. They were rewarded with shooting a miniature basketball, pinning the basketball on the net, and the grand prize — shooting free throws.

“Students were engaged throughout the process and eager to practice fractions,” school officials stated. “Last but not least, students were adamant that Dr. Artis shoot her free throws!”
