The students of Stacy Barnes’ fourth grade language arts class at Meherrin Elementary School have been busy learning about text features in a creative and engaging way — by conducting surgery.

A school news release stated that the students had to search through magazines and other written works to search for items on their list of text features. The students then “stitched” them back on to their patient with Band-Aids and glue.

This lesson was enhanced by one of Meherrin Elementary’s room transformation kits prepared and maintained by Karen Sledge and Barnes for the whole school to use and reuse.

“Keep up the great work fourth grade, and kudos to Mrs. Barnes for making learning interactive and fun!” school officials said.
