Franklin High School’s varsity boys basketball team finished its regular season schedule with a 3-0 week to enter the Tri-Rivers District Tournament this week with an overall record of 20-2 and the regular season district title in tow.

Included in the 3-0 week was a 75-46 road win against host Sussex Central High School on Friday, Feb. 3, an 18-point road win against rival Southampton High School on Wednesday, Feb 1., and a 74-65 home victory against Brunswick High School on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

BACKYARD BRAWL ON THE HARDCOURTS

The second game in the annual “Backyard Brawl on the Hardcourts” was played at the Southampton High School gym. As with the first game played in January, it was a win for the Broncos. This time they easily claimed a 68-50 triumph.

But for the record, in the very early minutes of the game, the home team did hold a 5-2 lead over Franklin before the visitors tied it at 5-5, and from there it was all Broncos. At the half, Franklin led with a score of 38-25.

The Broncos were led in scoring by senior wing Jordan Myrick with 20 points, followed by junior shooting guard Kaden Bailey with 14 points and senior point guard Derrick Perry with 13 points. For the Indians, sophomore shooting guard Israel Key was the leading scorer with 13 points.

After the game, Broncos Head Coach Robby Cutchins described it as “just another great overall good team effort. We are 24 hours removed from one of the best basketball games not only of the season but one of the best basketball games that the Broncos have played in a long time last night against Brunswick. That sealed the regular season district title for us, but I was glad to be able to bounce back tonight. Normally as I have always said, when Franklin and Southampton get together, you can throw everything out the window for the backyard brawl. But it is just great to get another win.”

SEALING THE REGULAR SEASON DISTRICT TITLE

In Franklin’s regular season district title-clinching win over Brunswick on Jan. 31, junior center Chaevon Torrance had a career game as he scored 36 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots.

“(There was) outstanding execution of the game plan both offensively and defensively as we defeated the No. 3 team in the state of Virginia at the (Class 2) level,” Cutchins said.

Perry also scored 17 points in this game.

The Broncos (20-2, 14-0 Tri-Rivers) were set to host Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in the district tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m.
