Franklin High School’s varsity girls basketball team routed visiting Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 70-13 on Friday, Jan. 27.

With the win, the Lady Broncos bounced back from a 54-49 home loss to Surry County High School on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Franklin enters its road game against Southampton High School on Wednesday, Feb. 1, with an 11-7 overall record, including a 7-5 record in the Tri-Rivers District.

On Jan. 20, the Lady Broncos chalked up another big win as they easily defeated the Windsor High School Lady Dukes 47-28 in the Peggy H. Wilkins Gymnasium at Franklin High School.

In scoring for Franklin, junior guard Ariana Picot led the way with 22 points. Junior forward/center Roshanda Hoskie had a good night as she had her second double-double night with 14 points and 14 rebounds. For the Lady Dukes, senior Melissa Carr scored 10 points.

Lady Broncos Head Coach Dennis Sumblin remarked after the game, “We came out tonight with a whole lot of energy. Before the game I told the team that we have to come out and play. Wednesday, we came out flat and got blown out.”

Franklin lost 41-27 to host and district foe Brunswick High School on Jan. 18 but rebounded nicely two days later.

“We played good ball the whole game (tonight),” Sumblin said. “Good defense. We took care of their No. 1 player. We knew if we stopped this player, we had an opportunity to win the ballgame. My girls played the box-and-one (defensive scheme), and they held it down well enough for us to get the win. It was a great victory for us.”

Tipoff for the Lady Broncos’ game Feb. 1 is 5:30 p.m. Then they host Sussex Central High School on Friday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 p.m. and Nansemond River High School on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.
