Nottoway Elementary School continued its theme of “Fall in Love with Reading” throughout the month of October with several literacy events and activities.

An NES news release stated that first, the students and their families participated in pumpkin painting with book character themes. Nearly 75 entries were made to the Literacy Pumpkin display this year.

Second, the Nottoway community was then invited to take part in the school’s annual Title 1 reading night, enjoying a SuperHero Reader theme. Students and staff dressed as their favorite superheroes while they shared a meal around the table, learned about the Title 1 program and how it supports the students of NES, and played literacy carnival games throughout the building.

The students even got to take home a pumpkin of their own, courtesy of a donation of more than 200 pumpkins by Jim Pope.

The celebration of reading concluded with a spirit day allowing students and staff to dress up as their favorite book characters.

“The school would like to thank the NES staff for all of their hard work, the Nottoway families and community for their participation and support and Mr. Jim Pope for his generosity and kindness,” school officials said. “Keep reading and learning, NES!”
