A Southampton County Public Schools bus was involved in a traffic accident Wednesday, Dec. 14, that resulted in no serious injuries.
This information was conveyed in a Wednesday afternoon letter, posted on social media, that was addressed to parents and guardians from Will Melbye, the school division’s coordinator of auxiliary services and transportation.
“This morning, one of our school buses was involved in a traffic accident when a passenger vehicle attempted to pass the bus as it was preparing to back up, striking it,” Melbye wrote. “All parties were evaluated on scene by emergency first responder personnel, and thankfully, no serious injuries were found to have been sustained by anyone involved.”
He explained that out of precaution, the bus driver was transported to Southampton Medical Center for further evaluation.
“The driver was evaluated, has been released and is at home resting,” Melbye stated.
After being cleared by emergency personnel, students were transferred to another school bus and safely transported to their schools, the letter stated, adding that upon their arrival at their respective schools, students were again evaluated by school nurses.
“We are very grateful to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office and Capron Fire & Rescue for their prompt response and attention to our students and driver, along with the driver of the other vehicle,” Melbye stated. “Southampton County Public Schools takes pride in maintaining the safe transportation of all our students and staff, every day.”
He said that if SCPS parents or guardians have any questions or concerns, “please do not hesitate to contact me, or any other central office administrator at 757-653-2692.”
