Franklin City Public Schools and Isle of Wight County Schools announced Sunday evening, Oct. 2, that they will be closed Monday, Oct. 3, while Southampton County Public Schools announced it will be open.

A statement from FCPS noted that its closure is due to pending inclement weather and possible flash flooding in the city of Franklin and surrounding areas.

On its Facebook page, IWCS stated that it has been in close communication with local officials regarding weather conditions for Monday.

“Significant tidal flooding and high winds are forecast throughout the region making road conditions unsafe for buses and cars,” the post noted. “Therefore, all IWCS schools and offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 3, for students and staff. In addition, the CIP meeting scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. has also been canceled.”

SCPS Superintendent Dr. Gwendolyn Shannon stated that her sources say they expect only “very minimal impact from Ian/the nor’easter over the next few days. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for the localities east of us, but not in Southampton County. Isle of Wight, Franklin, Surry, Suffolk and Southampton expect minimal impacts and do not anticipate declaring local emergencies. There may be some minimal road flooding in low-lying areas the same as when we get heavy amounts of rain. Also winds in the 15-20 range with gusts up to 25-30 mph over the next few days.”

“We are open,” she stated.
