SUFFOLK – Joyce Antnette Coggsdale Harrell, 90, of Holland Road, passed away Sept. 13 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her wonderful husband, Robert Lee Harrell Sr., as they were blessed to have been together for 56 years.

Born in Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late John Waverly Coggsdale Sr. and Bertha Harcum Coggsdale. She graduated from Newsoms High School. A house and farm wife, that loved working alongside Robert Lee and raising her family. There wasn’t a time when she wasn’t doing something for them. A good book or a game of Scrabble was a luxury.

She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, the director of Story Hour, on the Library Committee, and served on the Southern States Women’s Committee. She and her family were honored by the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce as Farm Family of the Year in 1999.

Survivors include her four daughters, JoAnne Copeland (Jimmie), Carolyn Crowder (Glenn), Alice Welsh (Michael) and Ruth West (David); two sons, Robert Lee Harrell Jr. (Paula) and Dennis Harrell (Robin). Her grandchildren, Angela C. Marshall (Bob, d.). Sheila C. Darden (Robb), Kathryn C. Freeman (Marcos), Janet C. Rowell (Chris), Amy H. Finley (Ross), Emily Harrell Bogle (Travis), Chance Crowder (Karissa), Madison C. Midgett (Andrew), Dennis Wayne Harrell II (Ashley), James Bryant Harrell (April), Ryan Welsh (Nikki), Jaimie W. Johnson (Jacob), Christian Welsh (Sarah), Robert Martin Welsh, Jordan West (Brett Smith) and Mackenzie West. Her great-grandchildren, Charles Edward Smith Jr.(Cheyenne), Ryan and Johnathan Marshall, Taylor, Robert Jr., Hunter and Alexandra Darden, Brent (Hunter) and Matthew Kearns, Jacob, Caleb and Dominque Freeman, Riley and Gabriel Rowell, Ransom and London Finley, Duke, Brianna, and Scarlet Harrell, Charlie Harrell, Charlotte and Everett Welsh, Reid Welsh, and two on the way. Her great-great grandchildren, Jesse and Bodie Kearns and Dallas Merkh. Her sisters, Doris Carr, Jean Vaughan and Evelyn Daughtrey; her brothers, John Waverly Coggsdale Jr. (Shelby) and Edward Coggsdale (Mary Carolyn); sister-in-law, Lydia Harrell.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Freddie, Hubert and Shelton Coggsdale and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Julian and Gilmer (Rachel) Harrell.

A funeral will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church, with burial following the service in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bethlehem Christian Church Memorial Fund. Friends may join the family at the residence.
