Route 646 safety improvements completed in Southampton

Route 646, Governor Darden Road, was open to traffic as of Friday, Aug. 5, following the completion of a safety improvements project on a section of Route 646 between Jenkins Drive and Ward Lane in Southampton County.
A Virginia Department of Transportation news release stated that VDOT contractor crews widened the shoulders on a section of Route 646 located approximately 3 1/2 miles east of the Courtland town line. In addition to shoulder widening and providing additional sight distance, side slopes were regraded and drainage upgrades were installed.
Gray and Sons Construction Inc., headquartered in Southampton County, began construction on the $667,657 project in spring 2022.
