GREENVILLE – Rev. Matthew Rooks Sr. departed this life on Aug. 6, 2022. He was born in Greenville County on March 7, 1937 to Matthew and Mazina Peebles Rooks.

Rev. Rooks attended high school in Greenville County and received a bachelor of theology from Union Christian Bible Institute in 1979. He was employed by Narricot Industries for many years. He was also a former Mason and certified Past Master in 1971. He was licensed to preach the gosp

el in 1976 under the leadership of the late Rev. John W. Brown, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. He later pastored Monroe Chapel Baptist Church for over 30 years.

Rev. Rooks cherished each day of the over 65 years he spent with his wife. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved being with his family, the community and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Rev. Rooks was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Sandra Rooks, one son, Gerald Rooks and eight siblings. He is survived by one daughter, Jackquelyn Barnes; three sons, Matthew Rooks Jr. (Edna), Malcolm Rooks, John Rooks; five sisters, Christine Peebles, Rosa Lee Lundy, Patricia Hayes, Lillie Anne Elliott, Lucy Bynum; two brothers; Thomas Rooks (Della), Frank Rooks; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

A public viewing will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, 30188 Shiloh Road in Boykins with the Rev. Angela Vick delivering the message.
