Southampton sheriff’s office starts murder probe

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office has started a murder investigation after responding to the discovery of human remains in Emporia on Tuesday morning, June 21.

A June 21 sheriff’s office news release stated that at approximately 10:06 a.m., deputies responded to the 24000 block of Adams Grove Road in Emporia in reference to human remains being discovered by a property owner. 

Due to the nature of how the human remains were found, a homicide investigation was initiated, police stated, adding that as of 5:30 p.m. on June 21, the human remains were unidentified and had been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk as a part of the investigation. 

The release concluded by noting that there was no further information available at the time, as this is an ongoing investigation.
