FCPS thanks board for raises, ‘gift of time’

Franklin City Public Schools faculty, staff and administrators surprised the division’s school board with enthusiastic applause and cheers as the board members came into the council chambers for the Thursday evening, June 2, meeting.
A school division news release stated that as board members stood before the audience, a few representatives came forward to personally thank the leadership for all it does for Franklin City Public Schools.
Most recently, that has involved ensuring pay raises and approving a new work schedule.
During the May work session, for example, the board voted 4-1 to adopt FCPS Superintendent Dr. Tamara Sterling’s proposal of a four-day schedule for the 2022-23 school year. From Monday-Thursday, the bell schedule will feature slightly longer days. On alternate Fridays, both students and staff will be off, and on the others, students will have a half-day, while teachers can use the remaining time for work and professional development as needed.
Among the speakers Thursday were Jennifer Culpepper, fourth-grade teacher at S.P. Morton Elementary School, and Dr. Regina Stafford, principal of J.P. King Jr. Middle School. They repeatedly acknowledged not only the upcoming raises in salaries but also most especially for “the gift of time” that the new schedule will afford teachers and staff on Fridays.
