The late Senior Trooper Robert A. Hill Sr., a Courtland native, was the recipient of a special tribute among the public safety professionals honored recently by the Virginia State Police for giving the ultimate sacrifice in service to the commonwealth of Virginia.

A VSP press release noted that the 2022 Police Officers’ Memorial Service, held May 25 in North Chesterfield, would recognize all 66 of the department’s law enforcement professionals who have died in the line of duty, to include a special tribute to nine sworn members in which either 2021 and 2022 marked a significant milestone.

Hill was among four 2021 special tributes. That year marked 15 years since he died while on duty in Southampton County. 

Each tribute included a single bell toll and an Honor Guard salute.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this marked the first year since 2019 that the Virginia State Police had been able to host its traditional Police Officers’ Memorial Service. The Hon. Henry E. Hudson, U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia, served as keynote speaker during the ceremony. The Powhatan High School Chorus “One Voice” performed the National Anthem.
