Carmyn J. Brown, of Southampton County, graduated May 14 from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, as the class valedictorian.

She previously attended Capron Elementary School, Southampton Middle School, Southampton Academy and graduated from the Ray Family Academy in 2018.

She is the daughter of Sonya Worrell, granddaughter of Deborah Worrell and Maurice Branch and the great-daughter of Thelma Everett, of Franklin, Tommy (Sonny) and Margaret (Dee) Worrell, of Courtland.

Her plans are to continue her education in applied mathematics where her focus will be on research and actuarial science.

Among Brown’s many accolades, she graduated summa cum laude, holding a perfect 4.0 GPA as she pursued an education in political science and mathematics.

She made the president’s list, honor’s list and dean’s list from 2018-22.

She was a 2022 inductee into the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and a 2019 inductee into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

She was a 2020 U.S. Census College Representative, and she was a 2021 Gilman Scholar.

Brown was part of the Rotary Club.

She was the co-founder and president of Belles Going Green and was the president of the Bennett College Chapter of the NAACP.

She was an undergraduate research intern at the Wilson Center for Science and Justice at Duke School of Law.

As a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Brown has been awarded the distinguished Northeastern Region’s 2022 Undergraduate SIGMA Woman of the Year Award, and her chapter, Nu Nu, has been awarded the Northeastern Region’s Loving Cup Chapter Award for the Most Successful Programs. She served as the centennial president, treasurer and historian of the chapter.
