The Boykins Town Council learned at its May meeting that the Coard Foundation has sold more than 50% of the bricks needed for the Boykins Blessing Bricks Memorial Walkway.

The Coard Foundation and other nonprofits like it have been offering a special opportunity for people to leave a legacy in the town of Boykins that honors loved, respected and admired individuals and organizations. People can do this by contributing to the Boykins Blessing Bricks Memorial Walkway, which is set to become a permanent part of the town in Buck Lassiter Mini Park.

People are invited to order a brick and dedicate it to the person or group of their choice. The bricks will be engraved to reflect this choice.

Reporting on an agenda item that was part of the Town Council’s May meeting, Boykins Town Clerk/Treasurer Victoria Edwards said, “The Blessing Brick Memorial Walkway project was reported to be over 50% complete. The Coard Foundation requested that the ribbon-cutting ceremony be during Pumpkin Fest in October.”

She noted that construction on the memorial walkway is not underway as of yet but rather more than 50% of the bricks needed have been sold.

“Anyone interested in purchasing a memorial brick can do so online at Coard.com or pick up an application form at the Boykins Town Office,” Edwards said.

The town office is located at 18206 Virginia Ave. in Boykins.

It was determined at the council’s May meeting that dedication of the new town shop would be tabled until all inspections have been completed.

It was also determined at the May meeting that the public hearing on the town’s proposed 2022-23 budget would be June 1, and Edwards confirmed that no one from the public attended that hearing.

The budget has been advertised as featuring $285,960 in income and the same amount in expenses. The largest form of income is listed as current taxes, totaling $114,011, and the largest expense is listed as general government administration, totaling $177,093.

Edwards stated that the proposed budget is expected to be approved at the June 14 council meeting.

Boykins Mayor Jackie Robertson asked that citizens put their garbage cans out before 7 a.m. on Mondays starting June 13, Edwards stated. Due to the increasing summer heat, Boykins Sanitation Department will be picking up refuse one hour earlier. 

Lastly, Edwards highlighted how the Boykins Parks and Recreation Committee is hosting its second annual Touch-a-Truck event July 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Raymond Parker Recreational Park (aka ballfield) located on Bryant Avenue. 

“Boykins Touch-a-Truck is a great opportunity for the community to meet first responders, law enforcement, local businesses and neighbors,” Edwards stated. “There is no fee to participate. Any local organization, farmer, business, etc. interested in showing their large equipment, trucks, tractors, etc. are welcome.”
