A tractor-trailer overturned on Southampton Parkway in Drewryville early Sunday morning, June 5, in what police said was a single-vehicle crash that blocked both westbound lanes of the roadway.
A Southampton County Sheriff’s Office news release indicated that the driver was not injured during the crash.
The release stated that it was at approximately 6:02 a.m. that deputies responded to a call for a tractor-trailer that had overturned on Southampton Parkway/U.S. Route 58 in Drewryville.
“Deputies located the accident on Route 58 westbound near Val Pro Drive,” police said in the release. “The tractor-trailer was blocking both westbound lanes of Southampton Parkway. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.”
Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Wyatt Whitby said that westbound Southampton Parkway near Adams Grove Road was shut down for hours.
The sheriff’s office stated that Virginia Department of Transportation officials arrived and set up traffic control with a detour at approximately 8:09 a.m. to get westbound traffic moving again. All lanes were opened back up at approximately 2:13 p.m.
The driver, Michael Luke Harvey, 50, of Nashville, Tennessee, received a summons for reckless driving, police said.
Whitby confirmed there was no fire as a result of the crash, but he explained the duties fire departments still have at incidents like this one.
“Mainly we check to make sure no one is trapped inside the vehicle, assist EMS if they need anything, block traffic, make sure there’s no potential for a fire to start, make sure there are no fluid leaks, and if there are, we stop those and make sure they don’t spread any farther.”
He noted that the agencies responding to this incident included the DVFD, Capron Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, VDOT and Southampton Towing and Recovery.
