Dispute between Ivor neighbors turns into shooting

Initial reports indicated that a Sunday, May 22, disturbance beginning as a dispute between neighbors in Ivor in reference to trespassing escalated into shots being fired, according to a Southampton County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The May 24 release noted that the victim of the shooting was last known to be in stable condition.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. on May 22, deputies responded to a call for trespassing in the 36000 block of Broadwater Road in Ivor, the sheriff’s office stated. While on the way to the call, additional information was received that a female subject on scene had been shot with a firearm.

When deputies arrived, they were notified that the female subject who had been shot had left the scene to meet with EMS personnel, the release stated, adding that deputies were eventually able to identify the shooter, the victim, other persons involved and witnesses to the incident.  

Police said that the victim, a 30-year-old female from Ivor, was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with one gunshot wound to the chest. 

Tanya Sawyer, 45, of Ivor, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, display/use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, and brandishing a firearm, the release stated, adding that she was being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

Police said George Weeks, 71, of Ivor, was arrested for brandishing a firearm and assault in reference to this incident. He was released on an unsecured bond and was not committed to jail.

The investigation into this incident continues and additional charges are pending.

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office and the Windsor Police Department for their assistance with the incident.
