The Franklin High School varsity soccer team is off to one of its best starts in program history as the Broncos sit at 3-0-1 on the season.

A Saturday, March 26, school press release continued by noting that the Broncos opened their season with a 3-0 win over rival Windsor High School. The game marked the first career shutout for senior goalkeeper Jaylon Santiful.

In the next game, Franklin tied the Southampton High School Indians 3-3.

The Broncos then won back-to-back games against Greensville County and Surry County high schools.

Franklin’s hot start has been attributed to its improved offense.

As of March 26, the Broncos were ranked second in the state in goals scored, with 17. Senior Bao Van leads the Broncos with eight goals, followed by senior Benjamin Owens-Kerbaugh and sophomore Cam Moody, who have three goals apiece. Also helping the offense are newcomers Greyson and Win Councill; they have combined for two goals and nine assists.

Franklin’s defense has also shown significant improvement this year, allowing only four goals in four games and being bolstered by two shutouts from Santiful.

The Broncos are looking to improve upon last season when they reached the Region 1B championship game and made a run to the state tournament.

Franklin was set to travel to Park View High School in South Hill this week before returning home to face the Dragons of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on Wednesday, March 30. That game is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m., and tickets will be on sale at the gate.
