A trio of garden clubs, including The Franklin Garden Club, are inviting community members to join them Saturday, April 23, for a tour of “Homes and Farms at the Edge of the Woods” in Franklin as part of Historic Garden Week, which is presented by the Garden Club of Virginia.
A press release noted that Franklin’s love for pine trees began in 1887 as the town saw manufacturing growth due to the Camp brothers, who purchased a small sawmill along the Blackwater River. Over the years and still today, citizens continue to benefit from the generosity of the family that made the pine tree symbolic of the city.
On the tour, four homes open for the first time include an updated farmhouse on a 600-acre working organic farm, a cottage at The Village at Woods Edge, and two homes in neighborhoods whose owners can still enjoy the beauty and freshness of those tall pines that have meant so much to the city of Franklin’s history.
The tour will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and its headquarters will be The Village at Woods Edge, located at 1401 N. High St. in Franklin.
The hosting clubs include The Elizabeth River Garden Club, The Nansemond River Garden Club and The Franklin Garden Club.
Those on hand for the tour will also have some other offerings they can enjoy on the day. There will be featured local artists, with their artwork available for purchase at The Village at Woods Edge; there will be a Franklin Cruise-In on Main Street, featuring impressive classic and modern vehicles; and there will also be “The Chamber Walk,” the recipient of the Garden Club of Virginia Commonwealth Award. On Sept. 16, 1999, Hurricane Floyd’s flood waters inundated the historic district in the city of Franklin and its 182 businesses. Emerging from this devastation as a project of The Franklin Garden Club, “The Chamber Walk” is a garden path that serves as a reminder of Franklin’s darkest hours and the difficult but defining days that followed.
Lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at The Village’s Back Porch & Grille. Reservations are recommended by April 11.
