IWA sports roundup: Baseball team starts 2-0

The Isle of Wight Academy baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 start to the new season with wins over Southampton and Tidewater academies.

The Chargers defeated Southampton 12-2 on March 11.

Senior Trevor Mason was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a solo home run in the third inning. Sophomore Payton Shipman was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Junior Jackson Cofer was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

IWA gave up three runs in the first inning to Tidewater Academy, but four Charger hurlers combined to hold the Warriors hitless over the next four frames, as IWA routed Tidewater 14-3 in five innings March 8.

Seniors James Thompson, Mark Thompson and Jake Lineberry and sophomore Ashton Rogers combined to hurl four scoreless innings, walking three and striking out eight.

Senior Trent Holland was 3-for-3 with three runs and three runs batted in for IWA. Mason went 3-for-4 with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Shipman went 3-for-3, scored a run and drove in another for Isle of Wight.

The IWA girls basketball team finished a successful season with a defeat to Covenant School, 56-24, on March 1.

Covenant went on to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state championship game, losing to state champ Miller School of Albemarle 62-29 at Benedictine College Preparatory on March 5.

Versus Covenant, the Lady Chargers’ leading scorer, senior Lily Williams, was held to three points.
