FRANKLIN – Martha Rhodes Wellons, 86, passed away Feb. 22, 2022. Born in Isle of Wight County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Elliott Rhodes and Bertha Carr Rhodes. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Rhodes Lowe and Annie Belle Rhodes Carr.

Martha was a bank teller at Vaughan & Company, Virginia National Bank, Sovran Bank and Bank of America. She was also a former kindergarten teacher at Mrs. Carolyn Clark’s Kindergarten. Martha was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class and the Senior Circle at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

She enjoyed making banana nut bread and sharing it with friends, working in her yard taking care of her flowers and birds and watching football, Nascar and cowboy movies.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 66 years, Floyd Wood Wellons Jr.; a daughter, Cindy W. McFarland (Frankie) and a son, Floyd W. “Woody” Wellons III (Connie) and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Wright Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Qualls and the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Franklin Baptist Church or the Wounded Warriors Project.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Southampton Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness.
