Contractor crews will mobilize and begin the placement of temporary signage and construction activities in the coming weeks on a Virginia Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the U.S. Route 460 (Windsor Boulevard/General Mahone Boulevard) bridge over Blackwater River in Isle of Wight County.

A VDOT press release continued by noting that starting as early as Tuesday, Jan. 18, motorists can expect lane closures on U.S. 460 (Windsor Boulevard/General Mahone Boulevard) between Zuni Circle and Tucker Swamp Road (Route 635) throughout construction.

The $2.87 million contract was awarded to Curtis Contracting Inc. and is estimated to be complete in fall 2022.

The project is set to rehabilitate the existing 34-year-old bridge over Blackwater River to extend the service life, improve the general condition rating of the superstructure and maintain safety.

The rehabilitation work consists of the removal of the existing pavement surfaces, concrete sidewalks and concrete parapets, followed by the repair of concrete prestressed slabs and construction of new composite concrete decking and parapets. In addition to the bridge rehabilitation, work will include the installation of approach guardrails and completion of minor approach widening in both directions along Windsor Boulevard/General Mahone Boulevard.

VDOT and the contractor will work to minimize impacts and mitigate traffic issues as much as possible throughout the project duration. During construction, access will also be maintained for local businesses and residences.

Motorists will be advised of any major additional lane closures, width restrictions or traffic shifts that may occur during the project. All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.
