Southampton County schools on 2-hour delay Tuesday

Southampton County Public Schools and Southampton Academy announced on social media that they would be operating on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 4, due to potential hazardous road conditions.

“This delay is due to freezing temperatures and the possibility of black ice on our roads,” SCPS Superintendent Dr. Gwendolyn P. Shannon stated in the school division’s social media post.

Southampton County Public Schools includes Capron Elementary School, Meherrin Elementary School, Nottoway Elementary School, Riverdale Elementary School, Southampton Middle School and Southampton High School.

In its social media post, Southampton Academy stated that its buses will operate on a 2-hour delay. Early morning care will not operate, and school begins at 10:30 a.m.

In its forecast for inclement weather Monday, Jan. 3, the National Weather Service indicated there could be new snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches in the Western Tidewater area.

The NWS was reporting clear conditions for Franklin on Monday evening but with a low around 21 and a north wind of 6-13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
