The Southampton County Board of Supervisors will be discussing during its Dec. 14 meeting a “parental rights” resolution that could impact funding of the county’s public schools.

At the Nov. 23 board meeting, Jerusalem District Supervisor and Board Chairman Dr. Alan W. Edwards led a discussion about a resolution the York County Board of Supervisors was considering that would threaten to withhold local funding for schools if the local school division failed to adhere to Section 1-240.1 of the Code of Virginia in teaching ideologies based upon the state’s cultural competency training.

The York County resolution is titled “A Resolution in Support of Parental Rights” and begins by stating that “the York County Board of Supervisors recognizes § 1-240.1 of the Code of Virginia

entitled the ‘Rights of Parents’ which emphatically states ‘a parent’s fundamental right to make

decisions concerning the upbringing, education, and care of the parent’s child’…”

The Southampton board voted for Southampton County’s attorney to draw up a resolution specific to Southampton County that the board could review Dec. 14, and the board made a point to invite the Southampton County School Board to the Dec. 14 meeting to provide input on the resolution.
