Blackwater Regional Library has launched the “Library of Things,” a new collection that allows local residents to borrow useful, everyday items such as baking pans, electronics, hobby-starter kits and more.

A library press release continued by stating that the “Library of Things” launched Nov. 22 and is free to library card holders 18 and older, who will be able to check out items for six weeks at a time. Items will be physically available at select locations, and all items will be available to be sent to the library location of the patron’s choice.

“It’s a great way for patrons to try out a device or gadget before they buy, or a way to explore a new hobby such as knitting or bird-watching,” said Elizabeth Qualls, the library system’s collection development manager.

All items in the “Library of Things” are available for browsing and placement of holds at http://tinyurl.com/BRLthings, and the library wants to add more items to its initial offerings. If anyone has requests for additional “things” or is interested in donating items in good condition to the collection, the library has set up an email — things@blackwaterlib.org — to send those ideas to.

“We’re really excited to bring this free collection to our community,” Qualls said. “We are pleased to offer this collection of ‘things’ that will help our community try something new, find a new hobby or get free access to an item that they may only need once. From children to adults, there’s something in this collection for everyone.”

A selection of items available is below:

  • household and kitchen items: various specialty cake pans, Mickey Mouse waffle-makers, cake-decorating tip sets, vehicle check engine light diagnostic scanner, stud finder
  • electronics: thermal laminator, digital voice recorder, portable CD player, portable video projector
  • hobby kits: knitting kits, crochet kit, knitting looms, weaving looms, ghost-hunting/paranormal kit, geocaching kit, infrared thermometer, bird-watching kits (for children and adults), telescope
  • musical instruments: hand drum set, acoustic guitar, electronic keyboard, ukulele
