Isle of Wight Academy’s varsity boys basketball team got 14 points from Trent Holland and 12 from Payton Shipman in a 72-50 loss to Richmond Christian School on Friday, Dec. 3, in the Chargers’ first road game of the young season.
IWA trailed by only 11, 40-29, at the half to a powerful Warriors team but fell behind in the third quarter when the home team outscored the Chargers 20-7. IWA narrowed the gap slightly after that, outscoring Richmond Christian 14-12, but the damage had already been done.
Holland led the Chargers with 13 points as IWA opened its season Tuesday, Nov. 30, with a 72-26 win against Amelia Academy in the first regular-season home game for the Chargers’ teams in nearly two years.
Teammates Shipman (11 points), Jason Chapman (10 points) and Evan Bracy (10 points) also finished in double figures.
The Chargers outscored Amelia 15-7 in the opening quarter Tuesday and continued to pour it on in the second period, claiming a 30-12 halftime edge, while the visitors could manage only one field goal.
The team was set to travel to Banner Christian School for a game on Tuesday, Dec. 7, and will host Kenston Forest School on Friday, Dec. 10. Games begin at 7 p.m.
The IWA girls varsity basketball squad bested Richmond Christian 63-14 Thursday, Dec. 2, and Amelia Academy 76-30 Tuesday.
The win versus Richmond came in the Lady Chargers’ first regular-season home game since Feb. 13, 2020, versus Atlantic Shores Christian School.
The IWA squad was set to play at Banner Christian on Tuesday and will travel to Kenston Forest on Thursday. Games start at 5:30 p.m. The team is also scheduled to play the host school in the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Holiday Classic at 7 p.m. Friday and against Steward School at noon Saturday, Dec. 11.
