The Christmas season is supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many people, it just isn’t.

The reasons may be many. People could be mourning the death or estrangement of a loved one. They may be grieving the world we had two years ago, when COVID-19 wasn’t known and our lives weren’t so greatly affected by this unseen scourge that has caused yet more division in our country. This time of year and the pressure brought about by societal expectations of gift-giving, party-going and more can be incredibly stressful for many. Some folks experience increased stress at their jobs, too, during this time of year.

Whatever the reasons are for not feeling quite so joyous this holiday season, Pastor Dan Elmore at Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield is hosting a “comfort service” on Dec. 19.

This service will include readings, prayers and a sermon geared toward people who just don’t feel all that merry and bright this year. Most importantly, it will acknowledge that it’s OK not to feel OK during the holidays.
