Amber Williams, of Franklin, is a college student taking a poetry class at Virginia Tech, and she recently wrote a poem about the City of Franklin.

She noted that the piece is inspired by a poem titled “Transients Welcome” that was written by Gregory Orr.

Williams, who is majoring in sports media and analytics, is minoring in creative writing, an academic path that includes the class focusing on poetry.

Following is her poem written about the city she has lived in since she was 4 years old:

“Franklin, VA”

The park fountain

bubbles as the water

falls on the broken grate.

The perfect climbing tree

sways its low,

snow-covered branches,

beckoning the young

and young-at-heart

to play pretend.

The rising smoke

from the mill

creates shapes

of party hats

and elephants

that can be seen through

the frosted window

of the joint

coffee shop and pharmacy.

The crooked

railroad tracks

lay waiting for the next

speeding vehicle

to pass by this sleepy town.
